What is GST? Complete Guide to Goods & Services Tax
GST, or Goods and Services Tax, is a value-added tax levied on most goods and services sold for domestic consumption. The GST is paid by consumers but remitted to the government by the businesses selling the goods and services. In essence, GST provides revenue for the government. Our free GST Calculator helps individuals and businesses quickly compute tax amounts without manual calculation errors.
Whether you are a small business owner, accountant, freelancer, or shopper, understanding how GST works is critical for financial planning. GST is applied at multiple stages of production — from raw material procurement to final sale — and is designed to eliminate the cascading effect of traditional indirect taxes.

GST Inclusive vs GST Exclusive: Explained with Examples
GST Exclusive Calculation (Adding GST to Amount)
When an amount is GST Exclusive, it means the tax has NOT yet been added to the price. You calculate the GST on top of the base price. This is the most common scenario for B2B invoicing.
Formula:
GST Amount = Original Amount × (GST Rate / 100)
Total Amount = Original Amount + GST Amount
Example: If your base price is PKR 10,000 and GST is 18%:
- GST Amount = 10,000 × 0.18 = PKR 1,800
- Total Payable = 10,000 + 1,800 = PKR 11,800
GST Inclusive Calculation (Extracting GST from Total)
When a price is GST Inclusive, the tax is already embedded in the price. To find out how much GST is included, you reverse-calculate it. This is commonly used in retail pricing.
Formula:
GST Amount = Total × (Rate / (100 + Rate))
Base Amount = Total − GST Amount
Example: If total price is PKR 11,800 (inclusive of 18% GST):
- GST Amount = 11,800 × (18 / 118) = PKR 1,800
- Base Amount = 11,800 − 1,800 = PKR 10,000
