What is GST? Complete Guide to Goods & Services Tax

GST, or Goods and Services Tax, is a value-added tax levied on most goods and services sold for domestic consumption. The GST is paid by consumers but remitted to the government by the businesses selling the goods and services. In essence, GST provides revenue for the government. Our free GST Calculator helps individuals and businesses quickly compute tax amounts without manual calculation errors.

Whether you are a small business owner, accountant, freelancer, or shopper, understanding how GST works is critical for financial planning. GST is applied at multiple stages of production — from raw material procurement to final sale — and is designed to eliminate the cascading effect of traditional indirect taxes.

🇮🇳 GST Calculator India

India implemented GST on July 1, 2017, replacing a complex web of central and state taxes. The Indian GST system uses a four-tier tax structure: 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%. Some items like essential food grains attract 0% GST, while luxury goods attract the highest 28% slab.

  • 5% – Essential goods, basic foods, life-saving drugs
  • 12% – Processed foods, computers, business-class air tickets
  • 18% – Most services, AC restaurants, telecom, IT services
  • 28% – Luxury items, automobiles, aerated drinks, tobacco

Our GST Calculator India supports all four slabs so you can calculate your tax liability accurately regardless of the product category.

🇦🇪 VAT Calculator UAE

The UAE introduced Value Added Tax (VAT) on January 1, 2018 at a standard rate of 5%. VAT in the UAE is administered by the Federal Tax Authority (FTA). The UAE's VAT system is one of the lowest in the world, making it business-friendly. Our VAT Calculator UAE helps businesses verify their invoices and ensure compliance with FTA regulations.

  • Standard VAT Rate: 5%
  • Administered by: Federal Tax Authority (FTA)
  • Zero-rated: Exports, international transport, healthcare, education
  • Exempt: Bare land, residential properties (local supply), financial services

🇬🇧 VAT Calculator UK

In the United Kingdom, Value Added Tax (VAT) is charged at 20% on most goods and services. Managed by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC), VAT has been a cornerstone of UK taxation since 1973. A reduced rate of 5% applies to specific items such as domestic energy and children's car seats. Use our VAT Calculator UK to calculate inclusive and exclusive VAT for UK invoicing.

🇺🇸 Sales Tax Calculator USA

Unlike GST or VAT, the United States uses a Sales Tax system that varies by state and even by county or city. There is no federal sales tax in the USA. Rates typically range from 0% to 12%, with states like Montana, Oregon, Delaware, and New Hampshire charging no sales tax at all. Our Sales Tax Calculator USA allows you to input any custom rate so you can calculate tax for any state accurately.

GST Inclusive vs GST Exclusive: Explained with Examples

GST Exclusive Calculation (Adding GST to Amount)

When an amount is GST Exclusive, it means the tax has NOT yet been added to the price. You calculate the GST on top of the base price. This is the most common scenario for B2B invoicing.

Formula:

GST Amount = Original Amount × (GST Rate / 100)

Total Amount = Original Amount + GST Amount

Example: If your base price is PKR 10,000 and GST is 18%:

  • GST Amount = 10,000 × 0.18 = PKR 1,800
  • Total Payable = 10,000 + 1,800 = PKR 11,800

GST Inclusive Calculation (Extracting GST from Total)

When a price is GST Inclusive, the tax is already embedded in the price. To find out how much GST is included, you reverse-calculate it. This is commonly used in retail pricing.

Formula:

GST Amount = Total × (Rate / (100 + Rate))

Base Amount = Total − GST Amount

Example: If total price is PKR 11,800 (inclusive of 18% GST):

  • GST Amount = 11,800 × (18 / 118) = PKR 1,800
  • Base Amount = 11,800 − 1,800 = PKR 10,000

What is the VAT rate in UAE?

How is GST Inclusive different from GST Exclusive?
GST Exclusive means the price shown does NOT include tax — you add the GST on top (common in B2B invoicing). GST Inclusive means the tax is already built into the shown price, and you extract it using the reverse formula (common in retail). Our calculator supports both modes automatically.

How do I calculate GST on a price?
For GST Exclusive: GST Amount = Price × (Rate/100), Total = Price + GST. For GST Inclusive: GST Amount = Total × Rate/(100+Rate), Base = Total − GST. Our free GST calculator handles all these computations instantly when you enter the amount and select the applicable rate.
Is this GST Calculator free to use?
Yes, this GST Calculator is completely free to use with no registration, login, or payment required. Simply enter your amount, select your country and rate, choose the calculation mode, and click Calculate. You can also copy the result for use in documents or spreadsheets.
